Generative Engine Optimisation usually gets filed under content marketing. Most of it is information architecture. For Rhino Africa I defined seven content layers, ordered by the sequence a crawler reads them.

Customer interviews, heatmaps, usability testing, internal surveys and competitive benchmarking. Usually more than one of them, because a single source rarely settles anything.

Mapping dependencies before designing anything inside them. For Kurtosys I mapped the platform, the data flow and how a document breaks into sections before drawing any screens. Most of the screen decisions were settled by then.

Working out what to make, against what can actually ship. I teach the process too, across two academic terms at the Academy of Digital Arts.

Interface, interaction and design systems. On Flanksource that meant working out how much density a dashboard could carry before it stopped being scannable.
